Then I repeated the same painting on canvas- I haven't painted on canvas in years. It was much easier than painting on paper and the bounce effect adds a kinetic dimension to the process. Great fun .

A couple of works in progress in 16" by 20" format.The lower one is almost finished- the eye markings need some tweaking. The upper one needs a few more layers and detailing. I desperately need some new brushes.-- the old ones are splaying at the tip rendering them useless.

Open Studio was totally delightful- my friend Erin took this photo of me on Saturday. She came with a friend and did an excellent job of explaining my evolution as a painter. I wish I'd recorded her- it sounded so amazing. Friends came on Sunday too- it's wonderful to experience unpredictable pairing of people with similar interests. The greatest joy for me was receiving people into my usually solitary workplace. I'm looking forward to doing another one next year.

Yesterday I got the framed paintings up - I am so happy to finally have them up. The walls are made of pegboard and the nails just kept bouncing off. Luckily Todd from across the hall lent me his hammer and mini-ladder so that made everything easier.

Painting of the Stargazer scorpionfish ( lower image ) was like probing a lunar lanscape; he reminds me of Charles Laughton as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame ". He seems to embody all the world's suffering. I've been delighted with the idea of hanging him next to my cheeky pufferfish (top image) like Comedy and Tragedy, the Greek theatre masks. Sadly, the framers have no time for me this month so I'll come up with another narrative- I'll put on my recent (unframed ) work on one wall and display the older work along the other two walls. It was amazing to see the framed work again - I need sunglasses to look at them, they're so bright. Only 11 more days until show time !

Two layers of " New Zealand Rock Lobster" which I started in early June after seeing Matisse's work at SFMOMA. I started by methodically filling in the shadows and details. The completed work is black, red and yellow with bright blue accents to heighten the contrast. I continue to be inspired by Matisse as I read his 2 part biography by Hilary Spurling. I'm currently finishing "The Unknown Matisse".

Time has flown by since my last post in May. Philadelphia and environs is replete with fabulous public gardens and a stupendous museum, equally nurturing for my creativity. On Memorial Day, I visited the SF Museum of Art for my first visit to the Stein Collection show with my friend and fellow artist Erin. We were amazed and delighted at the excellent quality and breadth of the show- I am enraptured by Matisse and Cezanne and have made repeated visits. In June I saw the Picasso show at the De Young for the first time- followed by a second visit a few days later. My creativity was galvanized by Picasso, deeply inspired by the variety and originality of his work.

Last night I attended a lecture sponsored by the Garden Conservancy and the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show- in the photo : Kay Estey, Garden Show producer talking to the presenter Dan Pearson, a noted British garden designer.( I was excited to get in as the website announced SOLD OUT.) I was thoroughly inspired by his vision in the public spaces he's created, one being Maggie's, a beautiful cancer care center in urban London and the other, a 400 hectare property, the Tokachi Millenium Forest in Hokkaido, Japan.

Last night I got an email titled- "Conversation about buying a painting ". What a sweet Valentine. She told me how much she liked my work and pointed out one of my paintings is NOT on my website- an omission I'm fixing asap. This is the season I'm getting my paperwork and digital files in order so that the business end of my artwork can run smoothly and I can devote myself to creating more wondrous sea creatures.

A Facebook friend- a person I've never met - sent me a link to a photo stream of Australian Great Barrier Reef fish, shot by a friend of his,taken with a Canon S 90, the same camera I have. I tried printing some of them in the hope of using them for source material. Unfortunately, the photo processing darkened the exquisite aqua color of the sea and the fish enough to render them useless to me. However, I now have direct access to the guy who shot the lovely photos-he's got more. I have to figure out a way to use them - a good photo printer/ digital photo display method. I love looking at the photos- I feel like I'm underwater, turning into a fish or sea dragon.

I mailed my entry form to the Falkirk Cultural Center and submitted 3 digital images ( jpgs.) by email. The deadline is Feb. 15th and notification of the jury's decision is Feb. 26th. I received a check from the Maui Ocean Center yesterday for $ 7.58. In 2006 I consigned a number of small( 8" x 10" matted )digital prints and occasionally received a check. Since I picked up most of the prints in 2008, I didn't expect to get another check. Anther sign of the great mystery that guides my art career- and my life.

This morning I picked up my paintings, neatly wrapped and ready to travel from Bucci's. They are now resting comfortably in my studio, waiting in the wings for their next performance. Two upcoming projects- first, applying for the annual juried show at the Falkirk Mansion in San Rafael, due Feb 15th, and second, call the owner of one of my large paintings to get permission to reproduce it as a giclee. I met a friend on Chinese New Year who lives down the block from this painting so I figure it's time to act.

I just received an email from Ken, whom I met through Craig's List personal ads - "Mention on you in online article ". I thought he meant someone had written about my show at Bucci's restaurant. However, it was a request to use my first name in an article he is writing on his online dating experience during the last year and a half ,to post on his website. "On July 15th, I met Rosie, an artist, a gardener, and a Buddhist practitioner- a few weeks later, I attended the opening of a show of her paintings, acrylics of sea creatures." - my show at the LightRoom in Berkeley.

This Wednesday January 26th, Clark Miller gave a slide show and lecture at the California Academy of Science. He is an accomplished underwater photographer and conservationist. His images are beautiful and inspiring . He explained the threats to the survival of beautiful coral reefs and their inhabitants in an easily assimilable way. I'm having a show at Bucci's Restaurant , 6121 Hollis St. in Emeryville, CA. 94608 from January 8th to February 4th, 2011. The opening will be on January 12th from 4 to 6 pm.
I'm happy that I've got an abundance of framed pieces ready to go . The frames I had made this summer are much classier than the older ones so I may upgrade another one for Bucci's.

In October I found a new studio as the building I'd been working in is closing at the end of the year for seismic upgrading. I'm delighted by my new space , the landlords and the other artists/craftspeople tenants. I moved with the help of my friends Steve and Bill- a big thank you to them. I'm finally settling in and painting again. I'm planning an Open House after the holidays.

My opening on August 21st at the LightRoom in Berkeley was a delight- thank you to all my friends and collectors who came. My six large original watercolor/acrylic paintings, two of them newly framed, looked wonderful along the east wall. Smaller giclee prints and a few originals filled the rest of the space.

I'm back at work after almost a month off preparing for my show. I feel exhilarated. I'm persevering on a close-up I considered " too difficult". Now it has so many different colors and textures- the eye is especially intricate , a little planet all of its own. Reminds me of the view of the human eye I saw at the optometrist when my ex-husband's iris was injured with a fleck of metal debris- it looked like a small crater on Saturn. The fish eye is more psychedelic and definitely intact.
Tomorrow I pick up finishe giclees at the printers. The Fire of summer is lighting up every aspect of my life .

I'm getting ready for my show at the LightRoom , 2263 5th St.Berkeley, CA. from August 16th to Sept. 6th. The opening is Saturday August 21st from 2 to 5 p.m. Half of the show will be giclees- fine art prints of my original paintings- made by Rob Reiter, the owner of the LightRoom. The rest will be my original watercolor/ acrylics on paper. I've made two larger works- 22" x 30"- for the show. I'm excited to see them framed and in suspense about price increase since last time I had a large piece framed ! I cant wait to see two different sizes of the same work on the walls- I'm having smaller giclees made of the two new works. I'm pondering possibilities for next year's show. Several deadlines are coming up this summer so I'm gearing up on all fronts. I look forward to having a great time with you all, whether you are able to be there in person or in spirit. Enjoy the rest of the summer. We're waiting for fall here in San Francisco for our toasty weather !

These are my latest paintings, a moray eel and a sea dragon. I'm working with a smaller #1 brush , 1/8" wide and pointy - marking pens bleed with water, which is annoying . I'm working more slowly and carefully, savoring each stroke. It reminds me of my first paint-by-number but I get to design and paint it.
My recent trip to Kansas for my son's wedding was wonderful- I love his bride who is beautiful inside and out. I was able to visit the wonderful Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City twice. I really wanted to see the larger than life-sized gilded statue of Kwan Yin, the Chinese Goddess of Compassion. I've seen her reproduced so many times and used her image in some fun collages in the early '90s. She was hidden behind a screen, quite befitting her modesty , as a new exhibit was being installed- I took a peek through the joints of the screen and a blurry photo too. My English brother commented "You wouldn't find a museum of this quality in a city of similar size in the UK." It was like a mini British Museum, so many different cultures were represented. I'll be going back there for sure. I didn't get to the African art.

Today, the two week Chinese New Year period ends. Time to put away the lovely decorations and hope the Tiger treats us well this coming year. I saw a wonderful movie, Sea Horse Sleuth, at the Ocean Film Festival on Feb. 7th.

I'm inspired by the nuanced colors of seahorses and have been painting them avidly for a few months.

I took down my art show from the Tomate Cafe - thanks to all of you who dropped by to see it. I'll be in a group show in April at Autobody Fine Art in Alameda in April. My next solo show will be in August at the LightRoom in Berkeley. I'll post the details as I get them.

My son is getting married in a month; I've been excited and somewhat distracted from painting. I'm grateful my weekly art (MICA)classes keep me focused.

On January 9, I signed a lease on a studio ( 200 sq. ft.) with huge south facing windows at the Art Explosion ,a multi-studio former warehouse on 17th & Potrero. I imagined using it as a gallery space for Open Studios in the Spring and Fall- Big Time Art Star . Then I didn't want to give up my 140 sq. ft. studio in the Noe Valley Ministry, 10 minutes walk from my house,which seemed bigger after I moved room divider screens and finished artwork to the new place. (The Church will be closing for renovation in November). Last Friday, hanging my large watercolors on the walls at Art Explosion, I realized the sun would hit them and bleach them out. So I decided to cut my losses and give notice. I want to get paintings reproduced/gicleed,framed and out in various venues. I need a storage unit and a smaller work table at the Ministry studio to create more space. I could move out of my apartment and use it as an art studio- what would my cat make of that ? Life in the storage unit or at the Plaza with Eloise ? Tune in for the sequel.

Since October, I've made giclee prints of three subjects and sold a small( 5"x7")one of each. I've lined up two shows for April and August of 2010. I've stated working on a new series on larger sized paper. The subject this week is two male parrotfish fighting. The neon pink markings around the eyes contrast with the deep ultramarine bodies in a most satisfying way. I've had my latest paintings professionally photographed to add to the the website . The photographer recommended the Edith Caldwell Gallery in Sausalito as a possible venue for my work- she moved to Rockport, Maine in October ! The guidance of my intuition will indicate the next step.

I sold a pufferfish painting today from my recent show at the Noe Valley Ministry.Then I visited my other pufferfish, painted on commission several years ago for Melissa Smith and David Saslav of Renditions Music Services. Their haunted music studio party evoked great hilarity - spiders,skeletons, potions everywhere and zany piano student "torture" administered by the demented Dr. Flaustenbach and his assistant Eye-Gore reduced young guests to squirming, giggling protoplasm. Later on, the cauldron bubbled with networking and art marketing ideas.A very satisfying day.
